    Tim,

What computer programs to you use to render? I am an old CAD 2004 pro ( not a very creative program, mainly drafting) and I render alot for art's sake, , but in the "real world" of architecture and design, I need to get things done in a snap! What kind of programs do you or anyone else on this board recommend to learn for computer rendering?

    Cheers

Personally I find modeling in Sketchup is very effective, though it can be limiting when it comes to complex curves. Sketchup is by far the fastest one to learn, and fast to work in. If your into complex curves I'd recommend Rhino. Its fairly easy to get good renderings out of Viz or 3Dstudio. And most programs will export .3DS files which can be used in Viz.
      Good luck, have fun

      Sigrid,

Well, there's always my old favorite, Archicad <g>. I hear that Artlantis is good, and I have an older copy, but never really got into it so I can't say. formZ does a bangup job, though, but I'm still just learning how to get an Archicad document into it. Artlantis seemed easier, but I've just mostly stuck with trying to get Archicad to do what I want because I haven't been able to afford to buy all kinds of shaders for Artlantis. There's a great new book on lighting with AC out now that ought to really facilitate rendering in AC, though. So much of good computer rendering is getting the scene lighted well.

        i personal use
        Archicad version 7
        artlantis
        Blender

(eventhough i've learnt vectorworks in College )

        yes i love sketchup.
the curve skills are no difficult.

You have to know how to make.

i meant to say NOT difficult.

Its quite fun and easy, once you get the hang of it.

          So try it out.

You've *got* to upgrade to v10 of Archicad, Jensen. The built-in Lightworks rendering engine just blows prior versions out of the water, and makes Artlantis or any other external rendering program utterly unnecessary. It doesn't yet have radiosity, but you can get really close with the new lighting tools that were also implemented in v9.

There are so many other changes since v7 that make the whole working process *much* easier - including full integration of what used to be called Plotmaker right into the main Archicad interface. Yep, Plotmaker got a lot easier in 8, but it's entirely gone now, completely integrated.

          What's Blender?

I 'learned' on Strata... went on to formZ (great fun).... and am now getting into Lightwave and Maya. (Using a Mac.) I've posted a couple of things I've done on my photo gallery... It would be nice to seem more of things done by you guys....
